2016 fashion trends are coming back and I'm not ready

Way to make us all feel old!

There's something off about the styling for children's clothing

I was a teen in the 2010s, meaning I was the prime age to enjoy a lot of the things young Gen Z-ers and Gen Alpha have gotten trending again - One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer (who I saw at the same show, by the way), and the era of Instagram where people would actually like your posts.

But, along with all of these great things, came some of the most heinous fashion trends the world had ever seen.

And, if seeing today’s teens romanticise this period wasn’t enough to make me feel absolutely ancient, seeing these pieces back on the shelves sure is.

2016’s calling!

We all know that fashion is cyclical. Still, we’re seeing pieces from the ‘70s to the early noughties make a comeback in different ways.

But, for some reason, the fashion world has decided that 2016’s greatest hits will be making a return to stores, at less than a decade old. Please, spare me.

If you know anything about 2016, it’s that day-to-day, we had a uniform.

Everyone who was anyone got around in THE green military-style jacket (if you know, you know), with a black and white striped shirt, black skinny jeans (high waisted, with rips in the knees) and a pair of Adidas Superstars.

And, of course, I don’t really mean everyone, but as a teen who had yet to develop any kind of personal style, I certainly played into the trends.

It’s baaaack

One by one, we’ve seen each of these trends trickle back.

The Lioness tops everyone’s been wearing lately definitely made me do a double-take. Adidas shoes have been trending ever since, so it wasn’t a total shock that Superstars (and their revamped alternatives) have been spotted on the feet of celebs once again.

But, the least likely of the bunch has now been spotted in stores - and I’m not ready.

Content creator @itskatesteinberg has taken to TikTok after spotting the iconic 2016 green jacket out in the wild.

“POV: The 2016 green jacket is back,” she said.

This particular jacket is found at Aritzia. But, there’s no shortage of ‘revamped’ versions out there.

“I have a fear [that] infinity scarves are next,” she added in the caption.

Will you be buying it?

Commenters on the post were torn on whether or not the jacket - and 2016 fashion more generally - should be coming back.

Many said their OG green jackets were still in the rotation, getting in early on the trend.

“Well this is great news bc I still have mine!” said one person.

“Jokes on them, I’ve been wearing mine this whole time,” another said.

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN! I still have mine. She never went away,” a third agreed.

But, for others, the green jacket is truly done. Forever.

“I got rid of mine last year after a younger coworker said ‘You're so cute in your 2015 jacket’,” one person said.

“Oh my I just had war flashbacks,” said another.

“Noooooooo,” another said simply.

I think I’ll be giving this one a miss.
