South Australian content creator and mum-of-four Hayley Berlingeri has been diagnosed with an inoperable tumour in her ribcage.
Announcing the heartbreaking news to her 125,000 followers, Berlingeri said the diagnosis “wasn’t on (her) bingo card”.
She discovered the aggressive tumour a year ago, a day after returning home from a girls trip from Bali.
“We won’t say the ‘C’ word around here … I just can’t speak that out over myself … but you get the gist,” she wrote on Instagram.
“It’s a very rare type, literally one in a million. And I’ve been told it doesn’t respond well to much. And it’s inoperable. Chemo and radio have been offered as my options, but in the same breath of being told that I should start treatment, I was also told that there was no guarantee that treatment would even work because of the stubborn nature of this thing.
“What I was guaranteed is that treatment would make me sick. And I don’t have time for that.
“I have four little children who need their mummy to be well.”
Berlingeri said she has read and researched and tried every other therapy, protocol and procedure she can find.
“(I) will keep trying. Forever. For them,” she wrote.
Posting to her Instagram story, Berlingeri wrote the tumour was a result of her breaking her ribs a couple of years ago.
“My body had a weird immune response in the healing process and … here we are,” she wrote.
She also told her supportive followers that she underwent a procedure called cryoablation in Sydney.
“I’m avoiding chemo/radio at all costs because it doesn’t sound like there’s much hope of it working anyway, but this option was offered to me and within two weeks I was booked in for it,” she wrote.
“It’s been much harder than I was prepared for.”
