Brisbane’s restaurant scene is firing up with a set of tasty new openings.

Prolific restaurateur Michael Tassis has yet another fresh venue, this time teaming up with former Same Same chef Jason Margaritis to launch Longwang in Brisbane’s CBD.

The venue, which is named after the lord of the waters in Chinese mythology, will serve up a contemporary menu fusing Chinese and east Asian cuisines.

Look out for Emme in Fortitude Valley for Mediterranean with a twist. Taking over the former Spoon site along James St, it will be chef Thomas Lian Tze’s first venture on his own following significant stints at Brisbane’s Hellenika and Yoko.

Meanwhile, for those who can’t make up their mind on what they want to eat at meal time, prepare for the launch of Mr Duncans in Fortitude Valley’s Chinatown. The work of former Halo Ground owner and ex-fine dining chef Vince Moefa’auo, the 200-plus-seat venue will include four separate kitchens, each serving different cuisines.

KYLE: YOU’RE NEXT

The king of commercial radio Kyle Sandilands has his sight set on Brisbane after an explosive first program outside of Sydney this morning.

Sandilands and fellow powerhouse Jackie ‘O’ Henderson officially launched their debut breakfast show to the Melbourne market today.

From Sandilands mentioning their newsreader Brooklyn being “a woke piece of s—t” to another mention of the show’s content directing having a “freakishly long French foreskin” to anal sex, it was an airing where nothing was off limits.

Sandliands also boasted as being a “fuel guzzling ex F-boy, coke-sniffing ass***e”.

Speaking on the show, Sandilands revealed he’s still got an appetite for expansion and that a Brisbane show almost came into being.

He said rival Southern Cross Austereo made a bid for himself and co-host Jackie O, including the proviso that their breakfast show be networked into Melbourne and elsewhere.

“I pushed it hard, I believe the show should be fully national in every capital city,” Sandilands said.

“You know the only reason I think it did happen (KIIS networking the show to Melbourne) is that Austereo (SCA owner of Fox FM) came back to us before our contract ended and offered us exactly the same thing that KIIS is giving us, to come and do it in Melbourne and Sydney and Brisbane and everywhere – so maybe they don’t have a lot of faith in their own show, because we were offered their job.”

‘YOU THOUGHT GEORDIE SHORE WAS WILD’

UK reality TV sensation Charlotte Crosby, has landed in Cairns to kick off filming for the much-anticipated Aussie Shore, the explosive spin-off of Geordie Shore. Taking on a powerful new role as the boss of a wild group of housemates, Crosby is setting the stage for a series that promises to outdo both Geordie Shore and its US predecessor, Jersey Shore.

“I’ve never met a crazier bunch than the Aussie Shore cast. If you thought Geordie Shore was wild, you haven’t seen anything yet!” she told the Scoop.

This week, filming kicked off at a stunning $4m beachfront property on Hibiscus Lane in Holloways Beach.

“We’re in the most amazing destination, when I walked into our house here, I was like, ‘our old house was nothing like this’– I was jealous!” Crosby said.

Her role as a firm yet compassionate ‘boss-mum’ marks a significant shift from her previous party-girl persona, aiming to provide both discipline and emotional support to the new crew. Aussie Shore is poised to deliver a significant economic boost to the region, injecting an estimated $3m.

PAULINE’S PIMP MY RIDE

Senator Pauline Hanson has been spotted making a return to the deep fryer in her new mobile fish and chip van decorated nose-to-tail in caricatures of her Please Explain YouTube show.

One Nation staff were offering a free feed to vulnerable and homeless people in Premier Steven Miles’s electorate – the political stunt carried out in the heart of a bustling tent city in Rothwell. But it turns out anyone can hire the van, with Hanson offering to cater personal or corporate events.

Hanson owned a fish and chip shop before joining politics and while her team’s fast-food skills were up for sale, she warned “they will have to pay extra to get my expertise”. And she made sure to tell children receiving a free potato scallop they were tasting her secret recipe.

QUEENSLAND’S POLITICAL MUSCLE POWER

Who knew that the real power in Queensland’s political scene comes not from debates or votes, but from barbells and treadmills? As the state’s political leaders, Premier Steven Miles and Opposition Leader David Crisafulli have found their secret weapon – and it’s wrapped up in gym shorts and sweaty workout routines

With the parliamentary gym out of commission due to a hefty $58m reno, these political titans have taken their fitness battles to nearby hotel gyms.

Miles shared his secret to maintaining a ‘ripped’ physique – a balanced mix of weightlifting and cardio.

“In a busy job it’s sometimes hard to get to the gym, but I find I’m more focused, less stressed and more productive if I take 45 minutes out of my day to work out,” he said.

It’s also been revealed that Miles, a known weightlifting enthusiast, set his personal best on the very morning former Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk stepped down.

Not to be outdone, Crisafulli’s day kicks off between 4am and 5am with a high-intensity cardio session.

“For me it’s about keeping a clear mind and discipline, and if I can start each day like that it sets the tone for how I like to work,” he said.

TRAVIS FIMMEL SPOTTED AT GC HOTSPOT

Aussie actor Travis Fimmel has been spotted unwinding at Rosella’s bar in Burleigh Heads this week, taking a well-deserved break from the intense filming of his latest series, Black Snow.

Sporting his signature ‘Travla’ baseball cap paired with a casual flannel shirt, Fimmel was spotted savouring a few beers with friends at the popular local bar. Fimmel’s return to South East Queensland marks his first project in the area since his 2022 role in the Netflix adaptation of Trent Dalton’s best-selling novel Boy Swallows Universe.

Black Snow commenced filming its second season earlier this month at various iconic locations across the Gold Coast. This latest season of the Stan original series sees Fimmel reprising his role as Detective Cormack.

ROOM FOR ANOTHER SCOOP …

IT’S HUMP DAY

Legendary UK singer Engelbert Humperdinck is preparing to say farewell to his Aussie fans with a tour in Brisbane in May. Fans still throw women’s underwear onto the 87-year-old’s stage, a tradition that began at the height of his fame.

“It does still happen occasionally,” Humperdinck told the Scoop. “I make light of it on stage, because I find it’s such a waste. None of them fit me.”

He plays QPAC on May 13 and 14.

FARM CHARM

A Brisbane beauty “who knows what she wants” is hoping she doesn’t cop the rough end of the pineapple on The Farmer Wants a Wife. Tourism writer Taneil Thornberry debuted on Tuesday night’s episode as one of two wildcards personally picked by Bert’s mum and she instantly made an impression by revealing her 20-point dating checklist to the Sunshine Coast pineapple farmer. When Bert said he didn’t tick the six-pack prerequisite, Taneil, 28, said she had replaced that requirement with “being fit and healthy” and assured the shy farm boy he was ticking plenty of boxes.

“He certainly caught my eye and I like his sense of adventure,” she said.

DOCTOR DUEL

Parliamentarians fearing a drop in on-grounds emergency care if the unofficial resident doctor Christian Rowan falls short of re-election need not fear after Labor unveiled its candidate to challenge his seat of Moggill – ED doctor Eric Richman. It will turn the inner-city seat, currently held by the LNP on a 3.6 per cent margin, into a doctors’ duel ahead of the October election, while the Greens are expected to pose a significant threat with teacher Andrew Kidd.

Dr Richman has come out swinging, declaring Dr Rowan “sold out doctors” when he was head of the AMAQ in 2013 and 2014 as the LNP Newman government cut jobs from Queensland Health.

“What we need is people, with strong voices standing up for public healthcare in Queensland, not talking it down, and not threatening to wreak havoc on it again,” he said.

Scoop hears the LNP is sounding out people for plum director-general positions across the state government. And if a David Crisafulli government takes a page out of the Palaszczuk playbook with the current cohort of directors-general – making them re-apply for their jobs after the October election – one wouldn’t blame them if they look for an early life raft.
