Susie O’Neill has officially signed off from her morning radio duties – but not before revealing her future plans.
The former Olympic swimmer, 51, isn’t saying goodbye to the airwaves entirely, revealing during a live broadcast at South Bank on Thursday that she will stay with the Nova family in a new capacity.
Speaking to a crowd of fans gathered at South Bank, O’Neill shared her plans to take a well-deserved break before diving into a new role as a guest presenter for both breakfast and national shows across the network in 2025.
She also plans to host podcasts with the network. “I said I wanted to stay with the Nova family. And yes, I will be,” O’Neill said.
“I’m still gonna have a gap year, but I’ve signed up to do some podcasts and some fill-in work.”
Speaking with The Courier-Mail, O’Neill admitted she’s still working out the content of her future podcasts but is excited for what’s to come.
“I’m feeling mixed emotions obviously,” she said.
“But I think I know it’s the right decision for me, so I’m happy. I’m looking forward to having a break. But I’m keeping my toe dipped in the water.”
O’Neill’s final show was marked by heartfelt moments, including a visit from Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, who offered a unique farewell gift.
Schrinner presented O’Neill with keys, not to the city, but to the toilet block at Yeronga Memorial Pools — a tongue-in-cheek nod to an infamous incident where she once blocked the pool’s facilities.
The farewell broadcast was packed with heartfelt moments and surprises.
A lucky listener drove away in a brand-new car as part of a live giveaway, while O’Neill capped off her final show with one last performance as DJ Lazy Susan – a callback to a challenge earlier this year where she performed for a nightclub full of fans.
This time, O’Neill was joined at the decks by her 19-year-old son, Bill, co-hosts Ash and Luttsy and Brisbane Lions captain Lachie Neale.
Her husband Cliff also cheered her on from the sidelines.
Popular comedian and Qweekend columnist Nikki Osborne is set to replace O’Neill on the Nova Brisbane breakfast show.
Osborne will join longtime hosts Ash Bradnam and David “Luttsy” Lutteral on Nova 106.9 breakfast from January 20, 2025.
