KIIS 97.3 breakfast show hosts Robin Bailey, Kip Wightman and Corey Oates have set the record straight on rumours of a “frosty dynamic” between them, addressing the speculation during their first full show together as a trio on Monday.
The trio addressed a recent article that hinted at behind-the-scenes tension between Bailey and Wightman, while also suggesting that the arrival of Oates could spark jealousy within the team.
Wightman was quick to quash the gossip, stating “we should address this Robin, you and I do not have a frosty relationship”.
“I can safely say this is possibly the least frosty relationship I’ve ever had at work,” he added.
Bailey, reflecting on her extensive career in radio, shared that she has endured far worse working environments.
“I think this is my 13th breakfast show in my career, and I’ve worked with some people who’ve truly hated each other,” she said.
“I’ve worked with people where you don’t speak, people I was told not to look at, and others who wouldn’t even look me in the eye.”
She also recalled her past experience on a different Brisbane show where co-hosts allegedly came to blows moments before going live on air.
“There was one team that I worked with here in Brisbane that literally, 30 seconds before the mics were turned on, they were in a headlock, punching each other,” she said.
But it was Wightman’s shocking revelation about his own tumultuous past that stunned listeners.
He confessed to a near-violent confrontation in a previous role before joining KIIS in late 2021.
Without naming names, he shared a story of nearly coming to blows and walking out during a heated radio moment.
“There was definitely fists clenched and people standing very close to each other - and that takes a certain level to push me that far” he admitted.
“And maybe one walk out, I just couldn’t do the show anymore.
“I couldn’t even listen, I was so angry.”
Wightman spent close to two decades behind the microphone at Nova 106.9 as a host of their breakfast show before making the switch to KIIS 97.3 in late 2021.
However, both Bailey and Wightman assured fans there’s no such drama in their new set-up.
“I was not dreading coming back to work, like I have been for many other years in the past,” Wightman said, emphasising that the alleged behind-the-scenes battle is pure fiction.
As for Oates, the former footy star seems to have settled in comfortably, joking that if things ever did turn sour, he’d let the music play them off.
“I’m just not an angry person,” he said.
