Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has opened up about his health and fitness regimen, revealing that he’s been “shredding for the wedding” ahead of his upcoming nuptials to longtime partner Jodie Haydon.
During an interview on B105’s Stav, Abby, and Matt show on Thursday, the 61-year-old gave listeners a sneak peek into how he stays in shape while managing the demands of his role.
While discussing new government measures to address shrinkflation and rising grocery costs, host Matty Acton couldn’t resist asking the Prime Minister about his weekly dinner habits.
When Acton jokingly suggested options like “spag bol” or “chicken nuggets,” Albanese shared that his diet is primarily focused on fish.
“I’ve got to say, I’m mainly on a fish diet at the moment,” he said.
With his engagement to Haydon announced earlier this year, Acton was quick to ask, “Shredding for the wedding, are we?”.
The Prime Minister, who plans to wed after the next federal election, admitted, “I’m trying to do the right thing. I lost quite a few kilos when I became Labor leader, and then I had, you might recall my car accident a couple of years ago, that was a bit of a wake up call to get fit.”
Albanese noted that finding time for exercise is challenging with his busy schedule, but it’s all about balance.
“It’s all about what you eat, but also getting a little bit of exercise. And getting exercise in this job is hard,” he said.
When asked by Acton if he’d consider using popular weight loss drug Ozempic, Albanese laughed off the idea, preferring to stick to natural methods.
“I’m not sure about some of the other effects of those things, so I’d rather go the natural route,” he said.
For the Prime Minister, his “special occasion meal” is one that many Australians will relate to – the humble pasta.
“My go-to used to be pasta. I would have it four times a week. Now it’s just special occasions, so I really enjoy it a lot more when I have it,” he admitted.
Co-host Stav Davidson couldn’t resist having a bit of fun with the PM, quipping, “The man of the people!”
The PM also revealed some simple dietary rules he follows to stay in shape. “I go to a lot of dinners and functions, and I just avoid the bread and dessert. It’s easy to overeat, especially when there’s always food available on planes.”
With his wedding plans set for after the next election, it seems Albanese is determined to stay in top form, balancing the demands of running the country with his personal fitness goals.
