Aussie A-listers, including Queensland’s own Margot Robbie, Baz Luhrmann, and Catherine Martin, stole the spotlight at this year’s Met Gala with their eye-catching ensembles.

The annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is a prime stage for the biggest names in entertainment and fashion, with this year’s theme of“Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” paying homage to the iconic designer.

Gold Coast actor Margot Robbie turned heads in a stunning black gown inspired by Chanel’s Spring 1993 Haute Couture collection, complete with a see-through corset midsection.

Visionary director Baz Luhrmann and his wife, costume designer Catherine Martin, made a striking pair in their edgy ensembles, embracing Lagerfeld’s monochromatic theme with style.

Luhrmann’s avant-garde outfit captured the essence of Lagerfeld’s experimental designs, while Martin’s star-studded, sequined, feathered, and frilled ensemble offered a harmonious contrast to her husband’s bold and angular look.

Other Aussie stars also dazzled on the red carpet, with Nicole Kidman opting for the blush pink Chanel Haute Couture gown she famously wore in the 2004 Chanel No. 5 perfume commercial, directed by Baz Luhrmann.

Her husband, musician Keith Urban, donned a classic black tailcoat tuxedo.

Hugh Jackman and his wife Deborra-lee Furness showcased their chic style, with Jackman’s salt-and-pepper beard complementing his sleek Zegna suit, and Furness sporting a curve-hugging, semi-sheer Tom Ford dress.

The decision to honour Karl Lagerfeld this year sparked debate due to the designer’s controversial past, including allegations of derogatory comments against sexual-assault survivors, immigrants, and overweight individuals.

British actor Jameela Jamil previously slammed the Met Gala theme, highlighting Lagerfeld’s history of “distinctly hateful” comments, particularly towards women.

“Karl Lagerfeld is the theme for the entire Met Gala next year. This man … was indeed, supremely talented, but used his platform in such a distinctly hateful way, mostly towards women, so repeatedly and up until the last years of his life, showing no remorse, offering no atonement, no apology, no help to groups he attacked … there was no explanation for his cruel outbursts,” she wrote

During Monday’s gala, the 37-year-old reiterated her opposition, accusing Hollywood elites of selective outrage and hypocrisy, and implying that their tolerance for problematic behaviour in the name of “good art” enabled abusers like Harvey Weinstein to persist for years.

However, the Australian attendees managed to sidestep the controversy by focusing on Lagerfeld’s artistic contributions, with their graceful execution of the monochromatic theme paying tribute to the designer’s impact on the fashion world while avoiding the contentious aspects of his life.

Catherine Martin and Baz Luhrmann even went as far as posting heartfelt tributes to the polarising fashion icon on Instagram before the Met Gala’s main event, showcasing their unwavering support despite the brewing storm.
