Brisbane singer-songwriter Sycco has made history at the 2022 Queensland Music Awards, becoming the first artist to win consecutive song of the year and pop awards.

Sycco, real name Sasha McLeod, was honoured for hit single My Ways, accepting the awards for both best song and pop at the sold-out ceremony at Brisbane’s The Fortitude Music Hall on Tuesday.

She won the same pair of awards last year, making her the first artist in QMA history to nab back-to-back best song awards, and follows the footsteps of Queensland success story Amy Shark, who won the pop category for three consecutive years until 2018.

Meanwhile Shark won the highest-selling-album award on Tuesday for her sophomore record, while Keith Urban took out highest-selling single for One Too Many featuring P!NK – in the US star’s QMA debut.

Brisbane band The Jungle Giants won album of the year for their chart-topping record Love Signs, celebrating the win with a performance of the album’s title track.

Newcomer Jem Cassar-Daley, who won the Indigenous award for her debut single Letting Go, also performed in a special duet with her father, country star Troy Cassar-Daley.

Other winners included Asha Jefferies in folk, Casey Barnes for country and Miiesha for soul, funk and RnB, while Brisbane band WAAX took out the rock category.

Rising star Zheani won both the heavy category and the triple j Unearthed Emerging Artist of The Year award. Toowoomba’s Cloe Terare won the coveted $10,000 Billy Thorpe Scholarship to help kickstart her music career.

The 26 awards were presented in front of a crowd of 500 guests during a ceremony hosted by Katherine Feeney and Michael Tuahine.
