Falling apart on stage worked a treat for popular Brisbane actor Emily Burton, who took out one of the top gongs at the 2022 Matilda Awards at Brisbane Powerhouse on Tuesday night.
Burton was named best female actor in a leading role for La Boite Theatre’s Naked & Screaming, a play about a young couple whose relationship falls apart after the birth of their baby.
It was bracing stuff, with plenty of histrionics.
Burton said the play held a special place in her heart and had been honoured to be nominated.
“I love working as an actress based in Queensland,” she said.
“There are so many diverse opportunities to work across theatre, screen and festivals that are unique to this state.”
The award for best male actor in a leading role was taken out by Jayden Popik for Mouthpiece, a QPAC and Queensland Theatre collaboration.
Darcy Brown, who played a pig in shake and stir theatre co’s production of Animal Farm, was named best male actor in a supporting role, and he described his win as “such an unexpected and tremendously lovely thing to happen”.
“I relocated properly from Melbourne at the start of 2021, and Animal Farm was my first time working with a Queensland-based company and my first project since moving here, so to be recognised for this show means an awful lot,” he said.
Co-hosting the awards ceremony with actor Judy Hainsworth was former QPAC producer, now manager of the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre in Bundaberg, Paul Dellit.
Dellit won the Gold Matilda for his work as president of the Actors and Entertainers Benevolent Fund (ABFQld).
Under his leadership ABFQld ran major fundraising initiatives and generated record levels of donations to support and assist performing arts professional financially affected by the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.
The award for best video design was won by Craig Wilkinson for Boy Swallows Universe.
