Alternative rock favourites Paramore returned to Brisbane for the first time since 2018 last night and blew away an amped-up crowd with nostalgic hits and a blistering performance.
Frontwoman, songwriter and founding member Hayley Williams played tracks off their latest 2021 album This Is Why, their first record since 2017.
While the Brisbane Entertainment Centre crowd enjoyed the title track single and new song Running Out of Time, it was when the group delved into their back catalogue, that the audience truly exploded.
Alternative rock classics such as Decode and That’s What You Get had the crowd headbanging and screaming along.
Paramore’s identity is representative of a special time in music, where alternative, emo bands became rock stars.
Williams even referenced when they performed at legendary, defunct metal music festival Soundwave in 2013.
She told the crowd at the start of the show that the next two hours was their opportunity to be free of all the world’s woes.
“This is your chance to feel what you’re afraid to feel out there. Scream, cry or just dance,” said Williams to her adoring supporters.
Her performance on stage was incredible, as she breezed and jumped around in her own eccentric style.
All the while headbanging as an elaborate lightshow and glitter bombs transcended the arena.
Paramore’s most successful and recognisable track is undoubtedly Misery Business, which always garners an invitation on stage to one fortuitous fan.
Last night the lucky individual was Steven from Colombia, who had the crowd cheering him on as he tried to match the iconic Misery Business chorus in singalong.
Paramore play Brisbane again tonight before heading to Sydney on Saturday and finishing the tour in Melbourne over three nights, beginning Monday.
Williams said the rest of the country should follow last night’s crowd’s lead.
“Brisbane, the rest of Australia has a lot to live up to”, she said to roars of applause.
Drummer Zac Farro and guitarist Taylor York have been pillars of the Paramore powerhouse since their inception in 2004.
They played a perfect backing role and rising singer songwriter talent Remi Wolf opened the show.
She has a simply fantastic voice and her tunes “Disco Hit” and “Prescription” showcased why the artist is blowing up internationally.
