It is comeback time for naughties Aussie music darling Julia Stone.

One half of indie pop duo Angus and Julia Stone, the now 37-year-old spent her downtime through the pandemic volunteering for a mental health charity.

Now, the five-time ARIA Award winner is back with a hauntingly beautiful cover of Foreigner’s I Want To Know What Love Is, which is the theme song for the upcoming Binge* TV drama, Love Me.

“I remember I used to watch Blade Runner with the sound turned off playing the piano to the visuals,” she said.

“This is in the realm of where I’ve wanted to go with my music. I have loved being on stage but I am really looking forward to doing more soundtracks and working behind the scenes a bit more.”

Stone will walk the red carpet at the Australian premiere of original series Love Me at Sydney’s State Theatre on Thursday, where she will perform the cover. The series launches Boxing Day and stars Hugo Weaving and Bojana Novakovic.

“We have obviously been making records for an hour now and when I’ve been watching a film or a TV show and one of our songs is used in a scene or the credits or whatever it is, I have always found it so exciting to see how the song can support an emotional moment in a story,” she explained.

“To actually write specifically for a feeling, there is a freedom to it, it is less about your experience or your personal journey … It is about these characters and having empathy for what they are going through and that brings up different things for me as an artist. I like not dwelling on the same six stories that go round and round in my head.”

The song will be available to listen via music streaming services, including Apple Music, Spotify and deezer, from December 9.

Stone also plans to continue her work in the mental health space, volunteering several hours a week for The Anxiety Recovery Centre Victoria and is enrolling to study psychology part-time online so she can manage that with touring as the world begins to open.

“I get a lot of satisfaction from it and I think I am quite helpful for people when they are really suffering in those moments,” she said.

“I am always interested in talking to people, that has been something that I have naturally loved.”
