Oscars 2024 red carpet: All the best glam and gowns from Hollywood’s big night

High School Musical actress Vanessa Hudgens chose the Oscars red carpet to confirm she is expecting her first child with professional baseball player Cole Tucker.

Wearing a floor-length, figure-hugging black gown, the 35-year-old actress cradled her baby bump as she beamed for the snapper squad.

Elegance in black was the dress code for early arrivals as modelled by Eva Longoria and Jamie Lee Curtis outside the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Aussie screenwriter Tony McNamara, nominated in adapted screenplay for Poor Things, hit the red carpet with his Aussie actress wife Belinda Bromilow.

Bromilow wore a jaw-dropping strapless black silk mikado gown from Sydney designer Velani, designed by Nicky Apostolopoulos.

The dress featured a corseted, draped bustier and a chic tulle ruffled skirt. The look was paired with diamonds by Nader Fine Jewels — who is also Sydney based — and a crystal clutch.

Apostolopoulos is no stranger to the international fashion scene, having dressed celebrities for the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, BAFTA’s and the Cannes Film Festival.

The designer’s clients include Rebel Wilson, Sophie Monk and Delta Goodrem. This is also the third time she has dressed a celebrity for the Oscars.

Actress and media personality Liza Koshy (Players, Work It, Transformers) is already an Oscars meme after stacking it on the red carpet.

Koshy made a quick recovery after being tripped up by her red fish-tailed Marchesa dress and towering heels and falling flat on her back ahead of the major stars arriving for the ceremony.

Barbie hitmaker Mark Ronson who produced the blockbuster film’s chart-slaying soundtrack was pumped ahead of performing the bonkers power ballad I’m Just Ken with actor Ryan Gosling.

“It’s an absolutely bananas spectacle, we are (probably) only going to be able to perform this once with Ryan ...backstage before we were saying we can’t believe we are a part of this,” Ronson said.

Ronson and Gosling are up against fellow Barbie soundtrack stars Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, who will also perform at the awards, for the Best Original Song.

Eilish and her brother Finneas are favourites to win their second Best Original Song award after claiming it in 2022 for the Bond theme No Time To Die.

As pro-Palestine protesters marched towards the theatre ahead of the ceremony, Eilish sported an Artists For Ceasefire pin.

WILL BRADLEY COOPER FINALLY GET AN OSCAR?

Maestro creator and star Bradley Cooper may have to bust out his “it’s an honour just to be nominated” face again at the 2024 Oscars.

Cooper has received 12 nominations over his illustrious career but has yet to take home the golden man statuette.

He faces stiff competition from Oppenheimer in the Best Actor, Picture and Original Screenplay awards this year and has previously been nominated for his roles in A Star Is Born and Silver Linings Playbook.

Cooper will be walking the red carpet with his mother Gloria on his arm. His girlfriend Gigi Hadid is reportedly skipping the awards and staying home with her three-year-old daughter Khai.

This year’s most unfortunate Oscars bridesmaid is likely to be legendary songwriter Diane Warren, who has been nominated 15 times for Best Original Song since 1987 and was given an Honorary Academy Award in 2022.

Warren’s song “The Fire Inside”, from the film Flamin’ Hot, is up against the favourite What Was I Made For? the Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell hit from Barbie.

Oppenheimer filmmaker Christopher Nolan has a more than decent shot at breaking his Oscars drought this year with the blockbuster tipped to dominate the 96th Academy Awards.

He has received eight nominations over the past two decades for his films Memento, Inception and Dunkirk.

Oppenheimer star Robert Downey Jr is the frontrunner to claim the Best Supporting Actor prize on his third crack at winning an Oscar having been previously nominated for his roles in Chaplin and Tropic Thunder.

Other contenders this year who have scored multiple nominations over the years for zero trophies include Annette Bening (five), Mark Ruffalo (four) and Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan who have each been “honoured” to be up for three Oscars for their work.

Several Aussies are up for an Oscars gong including screenwriter Tony McNamara, who was nominated in adapted screenplay for Poor Things.

Margot Robbie is nominated in the best picture category as a producer on Barbie but missed out on best lead actress for the feminist blockbuster. Both Billie Eilish and Ryan Gosling are set to perform Oscar-nominated songs from the movie.

Sara McFarlane, who produced Red, White and Blue, and Nicky Bentham the producer of The After are also nominated for best live action short.

Jimmy Kimmel is back as host for the awards at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Killers of the Flower Moon leading the winners predictions.

Variety awards editor Clayton Davis tipped Kimmel is certain to pepper his opening monologue with jokes about Barbie.

“I can’t imagine an entire evening that doesn’t reference ‘Barbie’ multiple, if not hundreds of times,” joked Davis.

Expect quips about the so-called “snubs” for Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, who were not nominated for directing and starring in the year’s highest-grossing film, and many references to all things pink.

“It’s going to be an avalanche of Barbie content. That might annoy a couple people,” said Davis.

Channel 7 will broadcast the Oscars on free-to-air TV and its streaming platform, 7Plus, in Australia.
