Alden Ehrenreich (set for the big leagues now after landing the role of the young Han Solo) steals many a scene in this goofy celebration of Hollywood’s fabled “golden age” in the 1950s from the Coen brothers (No Country For Old Men, Fargo). He plays a decidedly untalented actor attempting to make the switch from corny westerns to serious drama. Ehrenreich plays it dumb very convincingly.

Woody Harrelson (the roguish crook Beckett in Solo) is at his peak in this clever, fast-paced zom-com. The story transpires in an America laid to waste by a zombie virus triggered by Mad Cow disease. Four of the few uninfected survivors travel west in search of a rumoured safe haven. Keep your eyes peeled for the best Bill Murray cameo ever. Co-stars Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg.

Emilia Clarke (Han’s long-lost girlfriend Qi’ra) stars with Sam Claflin (My Cousin Rachel) in a most unorthodox romantic weepie. Wheelchair-bound Will (Claflin) would rather end his life now than be a shadow of his former, able-bodied self. There seems to be little that Lou (Clarke) can do about persuading him to stick around, but she gives it a red-hot go nonetheless.
THE YOUNG VICTORIA (2009)

Paul Bettany (the villainous Dryden Vos) provides plenty of leering light relief as a period-era pantsman in the court of Queen Victoria just after she takes the British throne in 1837. Emily Blunt plays the title role with sprightly aplomb, livening up some plodding plotting about political powerplays and a so-so romance with her German husband-to-be, Albert (Rupert Friend).

Donald Glover (a Solo standout as the young Lando Calrissian) is best known so far for his superb TV series Atlanta. However, he does have a handful of quality movie priors in supporting roles over the past few years. Glover is one of Channing Tatum’s assistant bundles of guy candy in this underrated sequel to the 2012 box-office hit, and does a great job with his signature stage routine.
