Another jobbing jog for the veteran of vengeance
-----------------------
After the tired terrorising of Taken 3, most people have had their fill of a battered old Liam Neeson losing his lunch and limping in for the kill.
Therefore Run All Night will probably only be seen by hardline Neeson nuts.
Those true believers will be satisfied enough with their irascible idol’s latest misadventures, which will be thrashed out inside the limited timeframe of a single evening.
Neeson plays Jimmy Conlon, an old-school hitman who has spent his entire career killing off the enemies of his mobster boss, Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris).
The pair were best friends as kids, and have remained close even though Shawn prefers to pass himself off as a legit businessman these days.
Now comes the twist that, somewhat predictably, will pit Jimmy against Shawn in a city-wide, all-night skirmish that will end in certain death for at least one of them.
Jimmy has just put a bullet in Shawn’s son. The kid was a bad egg. Had to go. He was about to put a bullet in Jimmy’s son Mike (Joel Kinnaman), you see.
So Shawn unleashes every henchmen on his payroll to kill Jimmy and his boy by sunrise.
Any more twists? Only the one: Jimmy and Mike have been mortal enemies themselves for the past five years. The teamwork needed to survive may not gel in time to save either from Shawn’s wrath.
Though Neeson stays well inside the same discomfort zone of recent times - even dusting off the same drinking problem he had in Non-Stop and A Walk Among the Tombstones - his scenes with Harris are top-notch tough stuff.
