Brisbane radio host Kip Wightman has voiced concerns about the whirlwind romance between his co-host, Robin Bailey, and her new boyfriend, affectionately nicknamed ‘Waffles’.
On Wednesday morning, Wightman revealed fears on-air over Bailey’s hastily-planned romantic escape to New Caledonia, three months into her relationship with her new ‘Belgian beau’, who she met online in late 2023.
“I think it’s potentially a massive mistake” he said.
“Three months you have been together, and you’re about to go to an international island together, there’s no easy escape, with a person that you honestly don’t really know.”
Wightman pressed Bailey on the logistics of their trip, questioning the wisdom of sharing a one-bedroom apartment with a man she’s still getting to know.
“What if after a couple of days, you discover that you actually don’t like each other that much?” he asked.
Bailey, however, remained steadfast in her belief that the trip would serve as the ultimate test for their relationship.
“In every single decision in my life, I never think it through; I only feel it,” she confessed, adding, “It’s a great way to fast track and if like if worst case scenario we went ‘you know what? This isn’t working’, then you kind of work that out quickly.”
Bailey, whose heart has been bruised by the loss of her first husband, Tony Smart, to suicide in 2014, and her second partner, Sean Pickwell, to liver cancer in 2019, remains undaunted in her pursuit of love.
“In the last 10 years, so much terrible crappy things have happened in my personal life, that I think I’ve learned that you gotta live right now,” Bailey reflected.
Many listeners backed her decision to follow her heart.
“Sometimes you just need to take a leap of faith and go with your heart,” one listener said.
