Jem Cassar-Daley makes history at the Queensland Music Awards

A Brisbane artist has made history at the Queensland Music Awards by winning Song of the Year, a title once claimed by her famous father.

Win for country music at ARIAs

Brisbane’s Jem Cassar-Daley has followed in her father’s footsteps to clinch the coveted ‘Song of the Year’ award at the 2024 Queensland Music Awards, held at the Fortitude Music Hall on Wednesday night.

This win not only celebrated her growing career but also marks a historic moment as she and her father, Troy Cassar-Daley, become the first parent-child duo to each snag this prestigious accolade.

Jem, 23, clinched the prestigious ‘Song of the Year’ for her hit single ‘King of Disappointment’, mirroring her father’s success when he won ‘Published Song of the Year’ back in 2009, for his heartfelt track ‘Big Big Love’.

In 2022, Jem made her QMA debut winning the Indigenous award for her debut single ‘Letting Go’, and even performed a special duet with Troy Cassar-Daley covering ‘Brisbane Blacks’, an iconic protest song by Mop and The Dropouts’ Dennis Conlin.

Cub Sport, another Brisbane-based powerhouse, continued their meteoric rise by snagging the ‘Album of the Year’ for their work ‘Jesus at the Gay Bar’ and the Electronic Award for the track ‘Songs About It’.

This came on the heels of the album’s chart-topping success and sellout national tour.

Joff Bush, was also recognised in both the Children’s Music and Music For Screen categories for his compositions for the beloved show, Bluey.

Veteran artist James Blundell was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award, celebrating his 34-year career that has significantly shaped Australian country music.

Reflecting on the significance of the award, Blundell shared heartfelt thoughts about the industry, emphasising the importance of longevity and character in sustaining a successful career.

“I am very grateful to receive this award,” he said.

“It is an acknowledgment of survival. I say to all the young artists I work with that longevity is a major part of the equation.

You can be fabulous for a nanosecond but to sustain a career, well you’ve got to be a bit more interesting (laughs).”

The ceremony was charged with emotional performances, including Jem’s breathtaking rendition of ‘King of Disappointment’ alongside Matt Hsu’s Obscure Orchestra.

Offstage, the celebrations continued as last year’s ‘Song of the Year’ winner Thelma Plum accepted her Valley Walk Of Fame plaque at a QMA pre-event, for her hit single ‘Backseat of My Mind’.
