TWO months after resigning from 4BC Ben Davis has landed a job on the sports desk at Channel 7, replacing outgoing sports reporter Rohan Welsh.
Davis, 44, who worked for Channel 7 for 18 years before leaving the network 5 years ago, will start his new role on October 10 — coincidentally the same day he started there in 1995 when he was 21.
“It feels like coming home,” he told Confidential.
“Opportunities like this just don’t come up every day. I was at Seven for 18 years. Pat Welsh has been there for 40 plus and Rohan has been there around 11 years. It’s about a once in decade opportunity.”
Davis resigned from his post at 4BC in July to spend more time with his wife Beck and their three children.
The job at Channel 7 fell into his lap when he got a text message from Pat Welsh out of the blue.
“He said ‘I’m going away for a month I need someone to do Sundays for me’,” Davis said.
“And then within a couple of weeks Rohan made the decision that he’s moving on to other things and Patty said ‘well, you’re here; how would you feel about it?’”
“I didn’t even expect this would be on the cards. I’m very humble to be thought of and I’m a big believer in it’s not what you know it’s who you know and definitely right place, right time.”
Rohan Welsh is leaving Channel 7 for a new job at Tabcorp.
