FOLLOWING its lauded debut in 2018, the Australian Women in Music Awards will return to Brisbane in October to once again shine a light on the accomplishments of women in the music industry.
In its second year, the ceremony, to be held at Brisbane Powerhouse on October 8 and 9, will feature 15 awards, including three new categories across classical music, music journalism and image making.
Nominations are open today and winners will be selected by a panel of expert jurors.
Last year’s inaugural awards were co-hosted by Katie Noonan and Christine Anu while Kate Cebrano performed and Amy Shark was among the winners.
Singer-songwriter Helen Reddy, best known for her 1971 Grammy-winning anthem I Am Woman, was the first person inducted to the AWMA Honour Roll.
Founding Executive Director Vicki Gordon said: “It is the spirit of inclusivity and the acknowledgment of some long overdue contributions that is manifesting AWMA into a calendar event.”
“We have so many wonderful people committed to the work we are doing. The AWMAs will keep getting bigger and more powerful; we are providing recognition for many women in the industry that have been ignored for far too long.”
Three forums will also be held during the event: visibility in hip hop, the art of rebellion — about music and politics — and image making.
The AMWAs is supported by the Queensland Government and Canon.
