It’s been 18 years since his dad died, so it was an emotional reunion for Robert Irwin at Sydney’s Madame Tussauds Wax Museum.
Irwin was moved when he saw the wax figure of his father Steve for the first time on Thursday, while at the museum for the unveiling of his own wax figure.
“I’ve seen pictures of it, but seeing it in person, I actually got emotional just looking at it,” Irwin told The Daily Telegraph.
“I hadn’t seen him in 18 years so it was surprisingly an emotional experience for me.”
The youngest Australian to have a wax replica, Irwin’s figure will be placed next to his dad in the Wild Australia section of the museum.
“I think it’s fitting that our figures are next to each other, I think it’s really special,” the 20-year-old said.
“It feels so cool to be the youngest, I suppose it’s a real honour and I feel like in my short almost 21 years I’ve gotten to live such a full and crazy life ... this is a very special milestone.”
The wax figure took nine months to create.
“It is just astonishing and I have such respect for the craft,” Irwin said.
“I thought it was really funny sitting down and they were comparing my skin complexion to other people’s skin.”
