HE WAS once crowned Australia’s fittest athlete, and now Queensland rugby league legend Billy Slater is determined to make a difference by tackling the nation’s obesity problem.

Concerned by alarming obesity statistics, the recently retired Slater will spearhead a fitness campaign designed to help Australian men, women and children lose more than 50 million kilos collectively.

In conjunction with wife Nicole and fitness experts, Slater has launched Move, an easy-to-use bodyweight training book with tailor-made plans to help everyday Aussies beat the battle of the bulge.

The multi-faceted training book also provide fitness, nutrition and motivational tips, giving people of all ages a holistic guide to achieving a healthier lifestyle.

A veteran of 319 NRL matches, 31 State of Origin games and 30 Tests for Australia, Slater racked up impressive numbers in rugby league, but figures on the Australian population’s overall health prompted him to act.

Slater was shocked to learn that 11.2 million Australian adults are overweight or obese. Around one in four children aged between five and 17 are overweight.

HOW IT WORKS: 20 seconds of movement with a 10-second rest. Two sets of each exercise is one lap = 10 minutes.

The Slaters’ comprehensive workout regime plans to combat the nationwide issue by getting Australians moving.

“Our goal is to help Australia lose 50 million kilograms,” said Slater, a two-time winner of the Australia’s Greatest Athlete television program in 2009-10.

“We want to help every Australian become fitter, healthier and happier.

“In retirement, I now have more time to be active with my family, so we want every Australian to join our team.”

While few Australians will reach Slater’s athletic heights, the father of two and his wife Nicole have devised a varied program that can be tailored to an individual’s needs.

With the help of Move master coach Mike Chapman and nutritionist Gabby Ratner, the Slaters have put together 10, 20 and 30-minute workout programs that can be completed on a daily basis.

The training plan is backed by a mobile application that helps users with weekly meal plans, digital shopping lists and daily recipes.

Mindful of the financial pressures on Australians families, Slater said he and Nicole had designed the program to be streamlined and cost-effective.

“There’s no gym or equipment required, except your body,” said Slater, who bounced back from two career-threatening shoulder operations three years ago.

“Our program is based on you moving for either 10, 20 or 30 minutes.

“This is entirely based on you, your fitness level or the time you have available for that day.

“Over the years Nicole and myself have discussed finding a simple, easy and effective way to help people exercise and maintain a healthy body weight.

“The workouts can be done by anyone of any fitness level whilst achieving great results.

“Even the kids can jump in which makes it great for the family.”
