THE dark and epic trailer to Queensland-filmed comic book blockbuster Aquaman was finally unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con at the weekend.
While the first look features heavy use of CGI, Hastings Point in northern New South Wales features prominently and there are glimpses of the elaborate set erected at the Gold Coast’s Village Roadshow Studios.
The two-and-a-half minute clip confirms the James Wan-directed DC film, which was shot on the Gold Coast last year, will stick to Aquaman’s original story as Arthur Curry, the son of a lighthouse keeper Thomas Curry (played by Temuera Morrison) and Queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman), and follows his misfit upbringing on land before he is coaxed into returning to Atlantis, with his half-brother Orm (played by Patrick Wilson) having taken over the throne and an impending war.
The scenes at the Curry family’s lighthouse home were shot at the elaborate Hastings Point set, where The Courier-Mail last year captured film crews using heavy equipment including cranes to build the house.
The film’s stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Wilson and Kidman participated in the Warner Bros theatrical panel for Aquaman during Comic-Con alongside Wan.
Kidman joked with the panel audience about her stunts in the film.
“My opening shot in the film is being washed up on a rock, and I got to lie there with massive waves washing over me,” she said.
“And I kept thinking, ‘Come on, James! Give it to me! The bigger the better! This is why I’m doing this movie!’ ”
Wan, who had planned for Kidman to play the role and approached her to do it, said she was “a trooper” while filming the scenes.
“We were pommeling her with this massive water tank that shoots rainstorms, just coming down on her,” he said.
“When you get hit with those, it’s like being pelted with rocks.”
She also told ET (Entertainment Tonight) she was due to get back to the set of Big Little Lies following the event, where she had been enjoying working with Meryl Streep.
“I bow down. She’s the empress,” she told the media outlet.
“We go out and we love eating Italian food in Monterey.”
Aquaman will hit Australian cinemas on December 13.
