“I saw an ad (for the dating show) on Facebook. It was a Sunday afternoon and I thought I might as well apply, I thought there might be some genuine people out there.”

“I sent a picture of me and my tractor and I got a call the next day.”

“A lot of people thought I was crazy. What have I got to lose?”

“I knew if someone applied they would genuinely be looking for someone. It’s not Married At First Sight.”

“I just said to them, ‘I need a girl with a beautiful heart and who will be a great mother to my kids’, that’s basically it.”

In the Channel 7 show, Sam selects a small number of women, from the many who applied to date him, to stay with him on his farm, where he lives with his father and grandfather, who bought the sugar cane property in 1958.

They expanded into tropical fruit a decade ago and while they are safe from drought in Far North Queensland, poor global prices of sugar cane has caused financial strain.

“I think that’s why a lot of people get put off farming because it is hard work,” Sam said.

“(But) I could never walk away from it. No way. The people that do walk away from the farm it’s because they financially can’t go any further. It becomes a part of you, a part of who you are.”

Channel 7 today revealed the women vying for the hearts of Sam and farmers Alex, Neil, Nick and Harry.

Sam’s suitors include reiki practitioner Natalie, 30, nurse Riley, 23, Madeleine, 24, a child educator, public relations executive Kirsten, 28, local government worker Karina, 29, student and waitress Emily, 24, client partner Sophie, 28, and visual merchandiser Ainsley, 27.

The network is yet to announce an air date for the show.
