A side effect of three years on TV on kids show Hi-5 was being too nice for upcoming actor Lachlan Dearing.

The 21-year-old this month made his big stage musical stage debut, starring in the all singing and dancing Saturday Night Fever at The Star’s Lyric Theatre.

“At first I was a bit too nice,” he said.

“It is that whole worry of being a kids entertainer and thinking you can only be in Disney musicals or whatever. No, that is the brilliance of being an actor, you get to be whoever you want to be and that is why this show is the perfect way to start my musical theatre career.”

Dearing auditioned for Saturday Night Fever days after finishing with Hi-5 at the end of 2018.

He plays the character of Double J in the musical that also stars Euan Doidge, Melanie Hawkins, Marcia Hines, Ben Turland and Angelique Cassimatis.

“Putting on the (American) accent, that changed everything,” Dearing explained. “I was used to being myself in Hi-5. I wasn’t playing a character. I was me, Lachie.

“Now I am playing Double J, who is completely different to my personality. He is a bit of a sleazeball. He doesn’t really respect people and that is not who I am or what Hi-5 represents.”

Dearing, who said he thought he had “no chance” of landing the Saturday Night Fever gig, looks back fondly at his time with Hi-5.

“That was my diploma in performance,” he said. “Yes I miss it but at the same time I am so happy where I am right now getting to work in a different environment.”

ORIGINAL HI-5 MEMBERS

Hi-5 first formed in 1998. Here, we take a look at what the original cast are doing now.

Kellie Crawford, 44

Formerly Kelly Hoggart, Crawford was actually once engaged to fellow cast member Nathan Foley. She married now husband Adam Crawford in 2008 — the same year she left the group.

Last year, she was one of 100 judges on Seven singing show, All Together Now, which was not a smash hit and has not been confirmed for another season.

Kathleen de Leon Jones, 41

Jones left the show when she was 30 to have a baby with Savage Garden’s Daniel Jones. They are still together and have two daughters, splitting their time between Las Vegas and the Gold Coast.

Nathan Foley, 39

Foley is married to Jamaican model Nicolette Gomex and works as a singer on cruise ships.

Tim Harding, 41

Harding left the group in 2007 after nine years. He and wife Natasha have two kids and live in Tasmania.

Harding is an open supporter of medicinal cannabis and still performs as a singer.

Charli Robinson, 39

After leaving Hi-5 in 2008, Robinson (then Delaney) landed a breakfast radio gig on the Gold Coast.

She divorced ex husband Brent Delaney in 2009 and in 2010 was linked to popstar Jason Derulo when she was 30 and he was 20.

Having left radio, she is now a regular on Getaway. She and racing driver partner Liam Talbot are parents to daughter Kensington.
