Lara Worthington has recently been outspoken about the environment and her commitment to sustainability. But it seems the struggle continues when it comes to that kids’ party favourite — plastic balloons.
Known as Lara Bingle until she married Avatar actor Sam Worthington and dropped off the radar, the 31-year-old opened up about her commitment to reducing plastic use, in a rare interview with Stellar magazine at the weekend.
“Every year, my husband’s boss gives us a Christmas present of plant-based products and reusable bottles and lunch boxes,” she said.
“We do as much as we can, wherever we can.”

This commitment to the environment, and avoiding plastics, was behind her signing as ambassador for Sheridan sheets.
“In addition to their long-term commitment to sustainability practices, their new Organics collection is wholly organic, creating quality products that last,” she told Stellar.
“The sheets come in little cotton bags, which I reuse rather than using plastic packaging.”
But not even a month ago, the former reality star threw her son, Rocket Zot, a lavish fourth birthday party complete with a monster truck made from hundreds — possibly thousands — of balloons, taking up a good portion of her living room.
And while we are not suggesting Worthington has done anything illegal, balloons have been identified as being just as bad as, or worse than, items such as plastic bags and straws, and are becoming the subject of legal crackdowns all over the world.
Laws against balloons — specifically releasing helium balloons — have been instated in 11 US states including California, Connecticut, Florida and New York, while in New South Wales it is illegal to release more than 20 balloons at a time.
The reason for these laws is to prevent balloons ending up in oceans and killing wildlife.
Worthington was recently back in Sydney for a Tiffany and Co. event, which was also attended by Kendall Jenner.
She left for her home in Los Angeles and yesterday uploaded a photo on a private jet flying across the US. We wonder if it was an emissions-free environmentally friendly private jet.
