THEY are the butt of every popular music joke and the band the world loves to hate.
But that didn’t stop tens of thousands of diehard Nickelback fans from bringing the house down at the Canadian rockers’ show at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre last night.
Demonstrating very un-rockstar-like behaviour the band arrived promptly on stage at the assigned time of 9pm, a trait fellow Canadian Justin Bieber could learn from.

There were terrible dad jokes, awkward storytelling and that classic mood killer: “drink up! The more you drink the better we sound”.
Despite this, frontman Chad Kroeger knows how to work his audience, opening the talking part of the night with a crowd pleasing anecdote about writing Animals, from the band’s fifth studio album All The Right Reasons, backstage at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. Then they played their massive hit Photograph.
From then and for the rest of the night, the crowd were with him the whole way.
Classic hits like Gotta Be Somebody and Faraway as well as songs from their 2014 album No Fixed Address were greeted with equal enthusiasm.
Haters gonna hate Nickelback but there is no denying their enduring appeal. If you can get through one of their songs without singing along, there is a stronger power in you than me.
Sure, it’s a little like watching your daggy dad get up and try to be a rock star, but the music is great, the lyrics are memorable and it all takes you on a pleasant journey of nostalgia that most bands can’t claim while still producing new music.
