Christmas came early for Taylor Swift’s ever-growing team of fans at Suncorp Stadium show

IT’S hard for Taylor Swift to surprise viewers, since most of them have witnessed every angle of her on YouTube — but one move by the pop star at Suncorp Stadium shows why her career is flying high.

#Swiftmas lit up Suncorp Stadium last night.

Christmas came early for Taylor Swift’s ever-growing legion of fans, who greeted her with the kind of crowd frenzy usually reserved for last-minute State of Origin tries.

From the opening seconds of Welcome to New York, with Swift surrounded by a team of male dancers, the audience was on their feet. And waving their flashing wristbands they received on the way in.

Of course these are songs about first loves, first heartbreaks, but there is something about Swift that transcends the familiar sentiments of the pop charts.

This reviewer has seen the biggest stadium shows that have passed through Brisbane in the past 40 years, from David Bowie to U2 and Coldplay.

As a spectacle Swift’s 1989 tour matches them, every second of the event choreographed for maximum impact.

Like the light effect on I Knew Your Were Trouble, with the entire stadium swathed in red from the stage and the wrist bands.

But as ever it’s Swift’s personal charm, just as it was when she first played Brisbane eight years ago to 1500 people at The Tivoli, that carries the day.

It’s all a long way and a lot of costume changes since her beginnings as a country music sweetheart, but the shining electro pop surfaces of the 1989 album, and songs like How You Get the Girl and I Know Places feel like anthems by the time they are sent to the far reaches of Suncorp.

Some of the visual elements nod to the golden years of Hollywood, and such is the impact of the production that it’s not until 45 minutes in to the show that one of Swift’s anonymous band steps forward for a solo.

It’s difficult for a show like this one to arrive with any surprises, since most of those attending have witnessed parts of it from every angle on YouTube.

But when she has the crowd singing along to just her and her guitar on Mine, you know that this is a career artist who will be flying high long after most of this year’s pop stars are forgotten.
