BRISBANE has rallied around recovering skipper Darius Boyd as he mourns the loss of his beloved grandmother, just days ahead of his scheduled return from injury in Friday night’s NRL preliminary final against Melbourne.
But Broncos forward Sam Thaiday is confident Boyd, who completed an entire session with the team yesterday, will be ready to fire in the grand final qualifier at AAMI Park after being sidelined for two weeks with a hamstring strain.
“It’s a tough time for Darius. I’m sure that all of us boys will gather around him over the next couple of days,” he said. “It’s very hard when you don’t have a lot of family but this is a big part of his family, this Broncos team.”
Boyd looked in good spirits as he smiled with teammates and talked tactics with coach Wayne Bennett during training at Red Hill yesterday, which was his first proper session with the team since injuring his hamstring two weeks ago.
Boyd’s grandmother Delphine had raised the Broncos’ skipper since he was 15.
Boyd’s wife Kayla shared a tribute to his grandmother on her Instagram, but it appears her account has since been taken down.
“Rest in Peace Nana Boyd,” she posted with a picture of Boyd with his grandmother and his one-year-old daughter Willow.
Thaiday said with help from his teammates, Boyd would run out at his best against the Storm.
“He will be there for sure,” he said.
Meanwhile, confident Queensland league fans are already snapping up seats to the grand final, even before the Broncos or the Cowboys play their semi-final games.
Brisbane Broncos fans are proving the most passionate in the country and have already purchased 7500 tickets to the final showdown of the season, which is in Sydney on October 1.
They are the second most popular club to have bought seats to the final, sitting just behind the Melbourne Storm army.
