THERE will be some serious star power hitting the Queensland-hosted Australian premiere of Aquaman, with Jason Momoa confirmed to attend the glitzy soiree next month.
Warner Bros Pictures and Roadshow Films announced today Momoa, who stars in the titular role of the DC Comics blockbuster, will walk the “blue carpet” at the Gold Coast premiere on December 18.
The 39-year-old will also greet fans at the event, which will be followed by a Sydney screening the next day.
It is part of a nine-city global tour for the film, which will begin in big movie market Beijing on November 18 before a world premiere in London on November 26.
The US premiere will take place in Los Angeles on December 12.
Industry sources have speculated the film’s Australian director James Wan and Amber Heard, who stars opposite Momoa as Mera, will also attend the Gold Coast event.
Momoa’s return to the Sunshine State for the event comes after Event Cinemas Robina hosted a premiere of Queensland-filmed Marvel movie Thor: Ragnarok last year, which was attended by the film’s star Chris Hemsworth after he was sent a personal invitation by Premier and Trade Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk.
The director Taika Waititi also walked the red carpet at the star-studded affair.
Aquaman wrapped shooting on the Gold Coast late last year and also stars Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Dolph Lundgren.
The $220 million superhero movie will hit Australian cinemas on December 26.
The confirmation that Momoa will return to the Gold Coast follows the Warner Bros. announcement that the Gold Coast had scored the Australian premiere on Thursday.
Ms Palaszczuk said: “Last year I personally invited Chris Hemsworth to attend the premiere of Thor: Ragnarok.
“Now I’m delighted to hear that Jason Momoa will return to Queensland for the Australian premiere of Aquaman.
“We’re very excited to have Jason back on the Gold Coast, where he’ll shine a light on Queensland as a global filming destination and a tourism hot spot for audiences around the world.
“Aquaman injected more than $144 million into the local economy and created more than 1000 jobs for Queensland cast and crew, plus an additional 700 roles for extras.
“The film showcases the technical and creative expertise of Queensland’s world-class crew and we are delighted to be the first state in Australia to see this epic movie on the big screen.”
It is understood Screen Queensland was in discussions with Warner Bros and distributors Roadshow Films to host the Australian premiere in the state, considering the support and investment put into the film locally.
