Meghan Markle revealed how a cabin crew member on her “freedom flight” out of the UK became the first person to acknowledge her “sacrifice”.
The 41-year-old Duchess of Sussex opened up about her flight to Canada following her last royal engagement in early 2020 during episode 5 of Netflix’s Harry & Meghan docuseries.
Meghan, who was travelling solo while Prince Harry remained in the UK to negotiate their departure, said the flight manager quietly delivered a supportive message to her as she settled into her seat.
“He took his hat off and I just remember looking at him … And he goes, ‘We appreciate everything you did for our country,’” Meghan said.
“It was the first time that I felt like someone saw the sacrifice. Not for my own country, for this country. It’s not mine.”

Upon landing in Canada to be reunited with her then 10-month-old baby Archie, an emotionally exhausted Meghan said she “collapsed” into the arms of her security guard.
“I was like, ‘I tried so hard.’ And he was like, ‘I know you did. I know you did Ma’am. I know you did.’
“And that’s the piece that’s so triggering because it still wasn’t good enough and you still don’t fit in.”
A few weeks after that, Meghan and Harry relocated from Canada to Meghan’s home town of California, as they shared videos of the moment from their private jet.
The segment has been dubbed “tone deaf” by viewers – with most critics singling out Meghan for her “sacrifice” comment – given the word is often associated with servicemen and women who put their lives on the line.
Meghan Markle thinks "sacrifice" is flying from London to Canada after putting her boot into the Royal Family. The sheer scale of the vanity and narcissism on display is simply breathtaking.https://t.co/6czAz05Dv9

It comes as the final three episodes of their Netflix series dropped on Thursday night.
They kicked off the final instalment talking about their fairytale wedding, before claiming things took a turn for the worse following their tour of Australia in October 2018.
“I think Australia was a real turning point,” a friend said. “Because they were so popular, so popular with the public.
“And the palace, were incredibly threatened by that.”
Shortly afterwards, Harry recalled a night out with the entire royal family in attendance at Buckingham Palace, including the Queen.
But the next day, it was Meghan on the front page of the newspapers, not the monarch or Kate.
“That’s when the hammer dropped,” Harry said.
“I went, ‘Oh my God!’” Meghan recalled of seeing the front page.
“My mum felt the same way,” Harry said. “It was almost like from the wedding and everything I saw that they were building her up.
“And then there was a shift and they started to tear her down,” he said.
“At the time … we laughed about because it’s so ridiculous.
“But an attack can be preposterous, but it’s still an attack and that drip feed of constant attack on someone who is an individual or real person has an impact.”
