Nine months after coming out, Natalie Bassingthwaighte looks happier than ever walking her first red carpet with partner Pip Loth.

Exclusive: Natalie Bassingthwaighte reveals new romance

Australian entertainer Natalie Bassingthwaighte has walked her first red carpet with partner Pip Loth, nine months after coming out publicly about being in a same-sex relationship.

Bassingthwaighte and Loth walked the red carpet at the Sydney premiere of new Aussie romantic drama Take My Hand on Tuesday night – and the pair did as the movie says, holding hands as they posed for the cameras.

Bassingthwaighte appears in the film, which is in cinemas nationwide this Thursday, playing the part of Rachel, sister of Radha Mitchell’s character, Laura.

Former Neighbours star and Rogue Traders frontwoman Nat Bass first went public with her new romance in an interview with Stellar magazine and its podcast Something To Talk About in November last year.

Bassingthwaighte had at the time recently split from second husband (and longtime Rogue Traders bandmate) Cameron McGlinchey. And as she told Stellar, she was now in a “beautiful” new relationship “with a woman who makes my heart smile and makes me happy.”

While fans praised Bassingthwaighte for speaking her truth, her coming out was not without difficulty: She found herself hounded by tabloid photographers, eager to discover the identity of her then-unnamed new partner.

She also had to deal with homophobic abuse from trolls on social media.

News.com.au caught up with Nat Bass in January this year, as she prepared to attend her first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras as an “out” member of the LGBTI community.

At the time, she was still feeling fragile after the intense whirlwind of attention she’d received for coming out.

“It felt like a relief when I said it in Stellar, because I didn’t know I was going to say it. I was just sitting there, and I’m like: “I think you say it. I think you say it. It’s coming out.” she recalled.

Fans praised Nat for coming out – but she also had to deal with homophobic trolls and tabloid intrusion.

“Then I said it and I couldn’t take it back! As soon as I left the interview, I burst into tears and felt an overwhelming sense of relief – but then came fear. How is it going to be received? Are my kids going to be bullied at school, and how is my family going deal with it?” she said.

She called the negative attention “overwhelming” but said it had subsided after she told the trolls to back off on Instagram.

“I just said: I’m not taking this, and if you want to say anything nasty, especially about my partner’s appearance, how they decide to dress and how they identify, that’s not okay,” she said.

But Bassingthwaighte also told us in January that the good had far outweighed the bad in this new stage of her life. “I can say that I honestly feel more like myself than I ever had in my life. And that’s what’s been like, whoa,” she said.

“I really feel comfortable in every single way.
