Natalie Bassingthwaighte has issued an emotional public plea via Instagram, after she recently publicly revealed she’s now in a same-sex relationship.

Bassingthwaighte made the revelation that she’s now dating a woman following the end of her 12-year marriage to bandmate Cameron McGlinchey in a candid interview with Stellar magazine and the Something To Talk About podcast earlier this month.

Speaking directly to her followers on Instagram today, Nat Bass thanked them for the “love and support” she’s received – but noted that “on the flipside, with love comes hate”.

One Instagram post in particular, showing Bassingthwaighte with new partner Pip Roth, has attracted dozens of rude and homophobic comments among those congratulating the happy couple.

“I don’t understand how people have time to go on someone’s page and comment so viciously and horrifically, and intentionally make people feel awful. It’s not accepted on my page, and I won’t have it,” Bassingthwaighte continued, telling her followers that hate against her loved ones - including her two children with McGlinchey - would not be tolerated.

“My team will be looking at the comments and blocking anyone who says anything negative towards anyone I love: That includes my family, that includes [ex-husband] Cam, that includes my kids and that includes my girlfriend. We all deserve respect and love because we are all human.”

Bassingthwaighte also hit out at inaccurate tabloid reporting about her new relationship. She had not named her new partner in her initial interview with Stellar, but in the days following its publication, the Daily Mail ran paparazzi photos of a Byron Bay woman they claimed was her girlfriend. They cited a quote from the woman confirming her “long friendship” with Bassingthwaighte as apparent confirmation they were actually a couple.

But last weekend, Nat Bass appeared to confirm her new partner’s identity in a post showing behind the scenes footage from her supporting slot at last Saturday’s Christina Aguilera concert in Melbourne.

Among the slideshow of images were shots of her hand-in-hand, smiling backstage with Pip Loth, a Queensland-based stage manager who uses they / them pronouns.

Bizarrely, the Daily Mail then doubled down, claiming Bassingthwaighte had a “complicated love life” and that the woman they named was indeed her partner, while Loth was actually her ex.

An Instagram post from Loth, shared by Bassingthwaighte, seemed to put an end to the conjecture once and for all: “Appreciation post for the most incredible woman who is not only giving me strength, support, love and immense joy, but is teaching me to understand and accept that I am deserving of these things and have them within myself too,” wrote Loth, alongside a picture of the pair beaming.

Shortly after that post went live, the Daily Mail quietly deleted all mention of the other woman they’d named from their stories. She later declined to comment when contacted by news.com.au, but confirmed that the Daily Mail’s reporting had been “so inaccurate.”

“I won’t accept paparazzi coming to my front door, following my friends, making up stories about us. It’s a load of crap. It’s not acceptable, and I want it to stop,” Bassingthwaighte said of the tabloid intrusion.

She finished with a plea for those visiting her Instagram page to “be kind. You don’t know what people are going through, you really don’t. Hate just brings more hate … and I don’t have any hate in my life.

“I’m happy, I’m safe, I’m well, and I wish you nothing but the same.”

Bassingthwaighte told Stellar that she was initially “terrified” about revealing her new same-sex relationship to the world, and sought advice from her ex, Cameron McGlinchey, about how to handle it.

“I rang Cam and I was hysterical. And he said, ‘It’s OK. This is your truth and you now have to sit in it and stand in it and own it.’ So to have that support from him has been nothing short of beautiful, and I’m very grateful for it,” she said.
