Meghan Markle has been ruthlessly mocked for a strange act she does in her much-maligned Netflix series during a “Trivia Night” segment on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show in the US.
Fallon’s sidekick, Steve Higgins, appeared in the segment and asked Fallon, “What is the number one question that mystifies scientists? Number One question.”
Fallon guessed, “Is there life on another planet?”
“Oh, no,” said Higgins. He then revealed the answer: “Why does Meghan Markle make her own pretzel bags? They don’t know why.”
The entire audience, as well as Fallon himself, laughed at the joke about the Duchess of Sussex.
“That’s interesting,” Fallon said. “She takes it from one bag and puts it in another bag, and that confuses people.”
In a scene from her Netflix lifestyle series, With Love, Meghan, the former royal transfers pre-packaged pretzels from US supermarket chain store Trader Joe’s into a personalised bag for her guest and friend, make-up artist Daniel Martin.
“This, we’re just going to put into a different bag,” she says about the Trader Joe’s Peanut Butter Pretzel Nuggets.
Meghan adds, “I know that Daniel loves peanut butter but I’m going to label this anyway, you always want to be conscious if someone has a nut allergy.”
After personalising the small bag with the pretzels, Meghan says, “I’m packing this all up so I can take it home and prep the guest room.”
The Duchess of Sussex was mocked online for the pretzel scene after the show came out earlier this month.
“I’m so glad Meghan Markle has a new show on Netflix where I can watch her take pretzels out of a labelled bag and put them into a new bag … then label it. The people’s Martha Stewart!” one viewer wrote on X.
Another person said Meghan “transferred pretzels from one bag into another like she was splitting the atom”.
“‘I have seen hostage videos with more entertainment,’ I announced to my husband after Meghan poured store-bought pretzels into a canister and tied a bow around it,” a different fan tweeted.
With Love, Meghan shows the former actress offering a “how-to guide” for entertaining at home in Montecito, California.
The series earned lower viewership numbers than 2022’s Harry and Meghan and was slammed by critics, who called it “an exercise in narcissism”.
However, Netflix renewed the show for a second season. The Sussexes signed a $A160 million deal with the streamer in 2020.
NETFLIX BOSS SPEAKS OUT ON MEGHAN’S FUTURE
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has spoken out about Meghan’s future amid the brutal reaction to her lifestyle show.
Speaking to Variety, Sarandos said that Markle has been “underestimated” by many while also admitting he has a stake in her lifestyle business, As Ever.
“We’re a passive partner in Meghan’s company, and it’s a big discovery model for us right now,” he said.
“I think Meghan is underestimated in terms of her influence on culture.
“When we dropped the trailer for the “Harry & Meghan” doc series [in 2022], everything on-screen was dissected in the press for days.
“The shoes she was wearing sold out all over the world. The Hermès blanket that was on the chair behind her sold out everywhere in the world. People are fascinated with Meghan Markle. She and Harry are overly dismissed.”
Like Fallon, other celebrities have weighed in on Meghan’s venture into the lifestyle business with her show and brand As Ever — including Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow.
“Everybody deserves an attempt at everything that they want to try,” Paltrow said in a new Vanity Fair interview.
“I’ve met Meghan, who seems really lovely, but I don’t know her at all,” Paltrow added.
MEGHAN SHARES THROWBACK PIC
It comes as Meghan shared a never seen before candid throwback picture to social media.
“When your dear friend from middle school/high school sends you something from your Alma mater and it brings the biggest smile to your face. Go Pandas,” Meghan wrote via Instagram.
“Thanks Sush xo.”
Meghan also tagged Immaculate Heart, a Catholic, independent high school in Los Angeles.
Earlier this week, Meghan took to the kitchen once more to show off some green waffles she made for St Patrick’s Day.
Following her Netflix cooking show, the former Suits actress, whipped up the tasty treat for Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three.
On her Instagram account, she showed how she whipped up some batter and then added it to her waffle maker.
She then decorated the breakfast creation to make a smiley face for the kids, including adding a kiwi for a mouth and blueberries for the eyes.
Meanwhile, Meghan also made a plate for husband Prince Harry with his version having strawberries and whipped cream.
Meghan wrote: “We love a theme.
“Happy St. Patrick’s Day.”
The treat could have been a special nod to the late Queen, who gave Prince Archie a waffle maker for Christmas.
Prince Harry revealed the generous gift to James Corden in 2021 as he appeared on the Late Late Show.
He shared: “My grandmother asked us what Archie wanted for Christmas, and Meg said a waffle maker.
“She sent us a waffle maker for Archie.
“So breakfast now, Meg makes up a beautiful organic mix and throws it in the waffle iron. “Archie’s review? He loves it.
“So much so, Archie wakes up in the morning and literally just goes, ‘Waffle?’”
Her St Patrick’s Day cooking demo follows the release of With Love, Meghan – featuring the duchess cooking with celebrity pals like Mindy Kaling – aired on Netflix on March 4 to mixed reviews.
The show is the second Netflix collaboration for the Sussexes, who signed a lucrative multimillion pound deal with the streaming giant back in 2020.
Despite the show being rated 3/10 on IMDb, it has been renewed for a second series.
A TV insider said: “This may raise a few eyebrows but one thing which Netflix love is controversy – and this show certainly created a lot of debate.
