Australian podcast host Alex Dyson has broken down on-air while playing a heartbreaking voice recording of his late mum for listeners ahead of Mother’s Day.

Dyson, who hosts the Matt and Alex - All Day Breakfast podcast with Matt Okine, got emotional as he played the audio, which his mum Helen had recorded back in 1992 a few months before she died of cancer.

“What I’m about to play for you is the most personal piece of audio imaginable,” he explained.

“I myself have only listened to it one time, and it is a cassette tape that my mum recorded for myself and my sister before she passed away.”

Okine sympathised with Dyson as he too lost his mother to cancer.

“I lost my mum when I was 12 and Alex Dyson, you lost your mum when you were four,” he shared, with Dyson replying, “Breast cancer took both of our mothers. This is a way to have my mum on the show. I’m really proud of her and so I want to tell as many people about that as possible.”

As the audio began to play, he started to sob uncontrollably with Okine also holding back his tears.

“I just want to say I love you both and how scared I am that I’m not going to be able to be with you and that you won’t remember me,” Dyson’s mum Helen could be heard saying on the tape.

“So all in all, it’s been a hard time, you two have been great, really. You really are the joy of our lives.”

The show followed a previous podcast episode where the duo discussed death and grief, with Dyson sharing how he processed his heartbreak over time.

“When you’re that young, you don’t have the memories and you don’t have the acute pain,” he said.

“I woke up one night and I sort of had a bit of an epiphany… there’s sort of like this gaping black hole in a life which until very recently, scientists couldn’t take a photo of an actual black hole, but they knew it was there because of the gravity going around it, and that’s what I sort of felt like.”

Okine said he had been reflecting on mortality himself, especially since becoming a father to daughter Sofia, who is the same age now as Dyson was when his mum died.

“You were four and your sister was two, and Sofia is four. And I’ve been thinking a lot about you and Sofia and what would happen if me or Bel died, and I’m going to get upset right now…” Okine said, getting emotional.

“If something happened to me, I’d be so upset that [Sofia] doesn’t share the same amount of memories I have.”
