Jordan Ablett’s take on Brownlow frocks from her couch
This year’s Brownlow Medal count was a huge change of scenery for the Abletts, with the family of three sitting out footy’s night of nights. But that didn’t stop Jordan Ablett from tuning in from her couch.
Brownlow Red Carpet
Don't miss out on the headlines from Brownlow Red Carpet. Followed categories will be added to My News.
So, it’s a change of scenery at the “Ablett ranch” this year. Rather than my entire day being consumed by a runsheet with the kind of precision that would be appropriate for a royal wedding, instead it’s much more quiet … even with an eight-month-old!
To set the scene, I’ve swapped my stilettos for a nice pair of slippers, I’m rocking a top knot but without the “top” and instead of wearing a beautiful custom-made J’Aton gown, I’ve opted for a heavy and super comfy dressing gown. The dream!
But I must admit, the change has been rather welcome.
I’ve attended six consecutive Brownlows since 2013 — many people often ask me about the pressures that come with walking the red carpet and how do I best handle it.
I definitely agree that the pressures are real, but, I can also acknowledge that they come from a variety of places, such as the media, the public and to be quite fair, even at times, ourselves.
Going back to 2013, the very first year that I ever attended the Brownlow, interestingly, I didn’t put or feel any pressure on myself whatsoever.
It was my debut, G was the favourite (which was super exciting) and I was just thrilled to be there to support Gaz… The way it should be, right? After all, the boys are the reason we attend.
However, as the years went on, I did start to uncomfortably notice the pressures and expectations begin to creep in that unfortunately can come with dating a high-profile person.
I’ve certainly done a full circle and have come a long way since then — I’m very much aware that the absolute most important thing is to feel comfortable, confident and content in your own skin, and that whatever you wear is because that’s what you chose to wear and because you love it.
The only reason that I’m ever on the red carpet is to wholeheartedly support my husband and to recognise the hard work, the commitment and the sacrifices that he and all his peers make for their families, their football clubs and their supporters.
I’ve been so blessed to work with exceptional leaders of the industry who have the highest work ethic and are so incredibly passionate about what they do.
I’ve been fortunate enough to work with who I believe is Australia’s best fashion and celebrity stylist, Lana Wilkinson.
In all the years I’ve worked with her, she has gone above and beyond for her clients in so many ways.
I’ve also had the pleasure of working closely with Anthony and Jacob of J’Aton who are truly two of the most down-to-earth people I’ve ever met.
We connected instantly over our love for coffee (we’re Italian, it’s what we do!) and not only have they created striking red carpet gowns for me and taken major fashion risks with me, they have been apart of my biggest day in creating my stunning wedding dresses and have even become family in the process.
I’ve also worked with the likes of hair stylist Joey Scandizzo, designer Toni Maticevski and make-up artist Cynthia Smyth.
JORDAN’S RED CARPET BEST-DRESSED
Moving along to this year’s red carpet, which I thought was pretty fab. I had already anticipated some pretty spectacular gowns, especially after having spoken to Lana prior to the event, who forecasted strong silhouettes in white, pastel hues of blush, as well as bold brights such as pink and yellow.
Full skirts with thigh-high splits would be a common trend and that a “less is more” approach in the overall styling would be a popular choice.
I thought all the ladies looked absolutely stunning, and the men indeed, rather dapper. I loved the elegance and confidence that oozed on the red carpet as the couples made their appearance.
Some of the many, many looks that I absolutely loved were:
• Lainey McIntyre in Zian Couture — elegant and natural
• Charlotte Viney in Oglia-Loro Couture — edgy and glamorous
• Nadia Bartel in J’Aton — architectural and magnificent
• Jessie Murphy in Oglia-Loro Couture — feminine and sculptured
• Hannah Davis in Cappellazo Couture — old Hollywood glamour and elegant
• Abbey Gelmi in Cappellazzo Couture — less is well and truly more… Simply stunning
• Ana Calle in Con Ilio — bold and beautiful
• Sarah Roughead in One Day Bridal — effortlessly stunning and classy
