Riverfire 2021: Fireworks spectacular returns after Covid-19 hiatus

Brisbane’s favourite free event is back with a major bang this year following the heartbreaking decision to cancel it in 2020 amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

Sunsuper Riverfire is Brisbane’s favourite free event and the good news is it will be back as the finale for Brisbane Festival this year.

The festival runs from September 3–25 and Sunsuper Riverfire is the climax and will light up the sky in the early evening on September 25.

It will cap three weeks of arts and community entertainment.

Brisbane Festival artistic director Louise Bezzina said the success of Brisbane Festival in 2020 provided the trust and confidence to safely bring back the iconic, large-scale event.

There will hopefully be the added attraction of the Super Hornet flyovers which will mark the RAAF’s 100 years of service to the country this year. That will be subject to operational requirements and availability.

“Sunsuper Riverfire has been a wholly inclusive and widely accessible part of Brisbane Festival’s program since 1998 and while some changes are necessary to ensure it is a Covid Safe event, it will once again surprise and delight,” Ms Bezzina said.

“The first time I saw Riverfire was when I was a uni student and it was the night of the year and the best party.”

Sunsuper Riverfire 2021 will light up the sky with a free pyrotechnic spectacular that can be viewed from hundreds of vantage points across the city including main venues such as South Bank.

Ms Bezzina said the festival was working closely with Queensland Health on delivering the event.

The event has support across the political spectrum with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner throwing their support behind it.

“Our government backs Brisbane Festival with over $19 million in funding for 2020 to 2023 as part of our commitment to support arts and culture in our state,” the Premier said.
