Blink-182 review at Brisbane Entertainment Centre, February 19

American punk icons Blink-182 turned back the millennial, angsty clock in Brisbane last night for their first of three shows, in a night that crowds wished could last forever.

American punk icons Blink-182 turned back the millennial, angsty clock in Brisbane last night for their first of three shows, in a night that crowds wished could last forever.

Lead by skater class clown Tom DeLonge on lead guitar and vocals, the Californian punks toured their latest album One More Time.

Bassist and singer Mark Hoppus alongside drummer Travis Barker (notably married to socialite star Kourtney Kardashian) busted out all the hits in their first Australian tour since 2013.

DeLonge began the show at Brisbane Entertainment Centre by flipping off the crowd as they opened with Anthem Part Two off the latest album.

Blink were coming off shows in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney and jokingly told the crowd “you’re better than those ugly Sydney and Perth crowds”.

Delonge never missed an opportunity to throw in a “ya mum” joke in between or during songs, with the band being famous for their juvenile humour since their formation in 1992.

Delonge quit the band in 2015 and the trio of Barker, Hoppus and himself had not completed a world tour of this magnitude in almost 10 years.

Barker was tragically involved in a plane crash in 2008 which prevented him from flying for several years and coupled with DeLonge’s exit, the punk outfit had left fans desperate for another tour.

As they built into the Brisbane performance with classics such as Feeling This and The Rock Show it was a matter of time before their iconic pop punk melodies began echoing through the stadium.

In a perfect punk crescendo, they played What’s My Age Again? First Date, All the Small Things and Dammit consecutively which exercised the nostalgic crowds’ singing voices.

It was a perfect display of iconic songs from an incredible, specific time in music, coupled with a spectacular performance and onstage chemistry.

Political, hardcore punk band Rise Against opened the night with a heavier jolt of aggression to get the crowd pumped up.

The early 2000s Chicago rockers would usually be a headline event but they took a back seat as fans longed for the unmistakeable anthems of Blink.

Blink has two more shows – tonight and tomorrow – in Brisbane before they finish the tour with final performances in Sydney and Melbourne.
