It’s the Victoria Beckham birthday present fans have been waiting for: The first photo of all five Spice Girls together in more than six years.
All five were in attendance at The Artist Formerly Known as Posh Spice’s lavish 50th birthday bash in London over the weekend, with Victoria’s husband (and number one Spice Girls fan) sharing footage of them on the dance floor together, busting out the iconic moves to their 1998 hit single Stop.
So far, that brief, blurry footage has been the best Spice sighting we’ve had from the party. Today, Victoria posted some proper photos from the do on social media – leading the way with the one photo everyone wants to see.
To quote Ben Elton introducing them at the 1997 Brits: They are Ginger, Sporty, Scary, Baby, and Posh – the all-conquering Spice Girls:
For those playing at home, the last time we had photo evidence of a five-piece Spice reunion was way back in February 2018, when all members of the group met for a planning meeting for what would then become their brief 2019 reunion tour of the UK and Ireland.
That outing went ahead as a four-piece, with Beckham deciding that life as a Spice Girl was very much in her past.
Her last performance with the group was back at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics – a performance that Beckham admitted afterwards had left her wracked with anxiety and made her decide to fully focus her attentions on her family and growing fashion empire.
Despite that, talk of some sort of a five-piece reunion continues to bubble away – thanks in no small part to the group’s most, ahem, optimistic member, Scary Spice Mel B.
It was Mel B, let’s not forget, who announced “Australia, see you in February!” at the end of the Spice Girls’ last concert to date, at Wembley Stadium in June 2019 (spoiler: They didn’t).
Almost a year ago, she told me while filming The Masked Singer in Sydney that “we’re going to be doing something together pretty soon, all five of us, which I can’t say when it is, otherwise I’ll be in trouble as usual.”
She’s repeated that claim in various interviews since – but so far, nothing, despite multiple reports all members might soon sit down for a Netflix tell-all documentary about the group’s rise to fame.
This could be the year to do it: While their smash debut single Wannabe was released in July 1996, the Spice Girls actually formed two years earlier, making 2024 their 30th anniversary.
