Mackay will welcome back nearly 5000 guests at the Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival after the event in 2020 was cancelled

Whitsunday Voices will return with a bang, after a Covid-cancelled event last year caused tickets to 2021’s festival to almost completely sell out in just a week.

The return of the Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival is set to be the biggest event in its 17-year history.

After the cancellation of last year’s event, reading and writing enthusiasts have rushed to buy almost 5000 tickets in just one week of sales.

Whitsunday Anglican School principal Andrew Wheaton said he was looking forward to his favourite event in the school’s calendar.

“One of the most poignant aspects of the festival is that it provides an opportunity for students in regional and rural areas to experience a world-class literature event,” he said.

“Literacy is such a critical skill for our young men and women to be able to embrace the future world, a world we can only imagine, where the only constant is change.”

‘Challenge yourself, contribute to your communities’

The festival will work with 50 local businesses who have chosen to sponsor the event.

Festival manager Tracey Gurdler said she was overwhelmed with the contribution of Mackay businesses, and without their efforts the festival could not take place.

“Because of their support, our children are inspired and educated every year by some of the best Australia has to offer in the world of literature,” she said.

“It is so important in a modern world to get our children reading more than their social media, and writing more than a status update on their iPhones.”

Schools that haven’t made class and student bookings are urged to secure positions now.

Tickets and a full festival program are available online here.
