A teacher from Redland Bay State School has been stood down after posting a shocking video of herself calling a student “dumb” and harshly critiquing their homework online.

The teacher, who has also been barred from working at any Queensland state school, filmed a video in which she was speaking to the camera about one of her students who didn’t enjoy homework before she turns the camera towards the student’s homework and points out various errors.

“ … I’m a grade three teacher okay, now we’re talking about persuasive writing in regards to like if students should have homework,” the teacher said in the video seen by The Courier-Mail.

“and this kid has pretty much put homework is dumb, homework is a piece of dog poo and I’m really sorry, I hate to roast but this kid, what the f***, what is that?”

Pointing to particular words, the teacher asks: “what’s this?”

“I don’t yeah … mate, this is, you’re saying, you know, it’s dumb but um, mate I think you’re dumb,” she said before laughing.

A Department of Education spokesman told The Courier-Mail they were aware of “serious allegations” involving a staff member at the school in relation to a video posted on their personal social media account and circulated online by others last month.

The spokesman said all allegations of this nature were taken “extremely seriously” and the department had dealt with this matter as a priority, confirming the teacher was “removed”.

“The employee concerned was promptly removed from the school and remains excluded from working at any Queensland state school,” they said.

The video had since been deleted.

The spokesman said the principal had met with concerned parents and other members of the school community to offer appropriate support, and address issues arising from this incident.

“For privacy reasons, the department cannot comment further on confidential employee matters,” he said.

One outraged parent from the school, who wished to remain anonymous, said they first saw the video on April 3 after it was sent to her by a fellow parent.

“I was disgusted,” the parent said.

“As a parent who’s already had a child that’s been bullied, I was pretty mad about the whole thing.

“My concern is just that you know, there’s enough bullying going on without teachers posting things on social media calling students’ dumb.”
