A thriving restaurant in the Sunshine Coast hinterland has unveiled plans to build an open-air dining area in its backyard and a new car park to free up space along nearby streets after proving a hit with customers.

A development application was lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council on December 8 for Piggyback along Koorawatha Ln, Palmwoods to add a 109sq m outdoor dining area and a new car park at the back of the venue.

It comes as one couple recently splashed $1.3m to buy their iconic cafe‘s building, while another couple opened a new business to add a nightlife scene to a quiet town.

The Piggyback expansion application, submitted by Adams and Sparkes Town Planning, showed the proposed parking design featured 19 car parks, three motorbike parks, six bicycle stands, a driveway, and a turning bay.

Piggyback owner Tony Kelly said he was building the new car park to take pressure off his restaurant’s street given people have been flocking to his eatery since opening.

Mr Kelly, also the mastermind behind Rice Boi and Giddy Geisha, said he hasn’t yet drawn up ideas for how to use the proposed outdoor dining area, but said it would currently be a “great” space for families to enjoy.

“The grass area is such a beautiful space,” he said.

Designs by architect Blackburne Jackson also showed the restaurant wanted to include a 176sq m covered deck extension.

Planning documents state the new car park would also be hidden behind existing trees on the restaurant’s 2751sq m property.

If the proposed plans get the green light, the town planner said the restaurant’s current opening hours, from 11.30am to 9pm, would remain the same.
