A Sunshine Coast couple spent $1.3m to buy their iconic cafe‘s building at a hinterland town dubbed the new “Byron Bay” to transform their venue into a slice of Melbourne.

Adrian Anderson and Kelly Robson founded Shotgun Espresso at 48 Maple St, Maleny in 2014 and were the anchor tenant before spending $1.31m two months ago to purchase the two-storey, 589 sqm site.

The location with 217 sqm of floor space and six individually-leased office spaces upstairs received six offers and more than 70 enquiries nationwide, with some from as far as southern Victoria.

Ms Robson said it was a “life-changing” purchase given it gave her security and now allowed her to explore a new era for the cafe.

She wanted to maintain the cafe’s fresh and homey atmosphere while transforming it into a Mediterranean wine bar serving alcohol and small plates at night after being inspired by similar bars in Melbourne.

Ms Robson said the purchase of the “beautiful” site alleviated pressure of high rent.

She said she already invested $200,000 for renovations.

“The more sensible thing to do would be to buy the building,” she said.

Ms Robson said they self-funded the investment, working “very hard” to land a commercial loan, and managed to make the right offer for the sale, saying she “banked on knowing my landlord better than anyone”.

Colliers Sunshine Coast real estate agent Nigel Irving, who helped handle the sale, said the previous owners sold to fund other investments.

Property records show the couple bought the property from Lamond Consulting Services, which spent $725,000 for it in late 2015.

According to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, the company’s directors were David and Polly Lamond from Kings Beach, Caloundra, and Susan Lamond from northern Queensland.

Mr Irving said the sale was attractive because the town was fast-growing and dubbed the “hinterland Byron Bay”.
