THE $1.1 billion Herston Quarter health precinct is a step closer, with preparations for construction of the first building to start next month.

Mutual organisation Australian Unity has executed a series of agreements for the development of the precinct adjacent to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in inner Brisbane.

Australian Unity Group managing director Rohan Mead said the project embodies Australian Unity’s vision to create the social infrastructure people need.

“The exchange of contracts between Australian Unity and Metro North Hospital and Health Service for Herston Quarter is a vital step on the path to delivering stronger future health outcomes to Queenslanders,” he said.

The Herston Quarter will have a specialist rehabilitation and ambulatory care centre; a private hospital; residential aged care; retirement living and student accommodation; childcare; a co-working hub and education and training facilities.

Australian Unity yesterday also awarded Watpac the $325 million contract to deliver a series of projects as part of the Herston Quarter redevelopment.

With activities to start next month, Watpac’s initial scope of work includes the relocation of

existing site services and decommissioning of redundant services before it commences construction of the new Specialist Rehabilitation and Ambulatory Care Centre for Metro North Hospital and Health Service (SRACC).

The building will provide 35,157sq m of facilities which includes 100 rehabilitation beds, special purpose rehabilitation support areas, and a surgical and endoscopic centre with a 32-bed

surgical inpatient room, seven operating theatres, three endoscopy rooms and recovery spaces.

It will be fully operational by 2020.

The project will also and feature a Sky Bridge Link to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Watpac will also deliver the Spanish Steps – which will extend from Herston Rd into the main public realm, dedicated car parks underneath the SRACC and the Spanish Steps, major infrastructure upgrade works and associated road upgrades.

The Herston Quarter project has a five to 10-year construction life and will be completed in stages.
