Pioneer rock promoter Hamish Henry has put his private Great Barrier Reef island retreat on the market.
The 8.7ha leasehold on Temple Island, 3km off Cape Palmerston National Park on the Central Queensland coast, is on the market for $1.75m.
Temple Island has its own 1100m private airstrip and has a renovated four-bedroom highset home on the 50ha island’s highest point.
Private Islands Online’s Richard Vanhoff said Mr Henry – who is in his 70s – has owned the property for past seven years and any buyer will be the sole occupant of the island.
“We’ve been asked by the owner to reluctantly sell Temple Island as they are now involved in a new and exciting family project,” he said.
“They want to see all their hard work over the last seven years be passed on to someone who will also benefit and appreciate and love the island and its marine life like they did.”
The sale includes a 20-year lease over the 8.7ha property with a national park taking up the rest of the island.
Mr Henry lives in Queensland and is involved in a number of businesses. In the ‘70s he lived in Adelaide and was involved in the rock scene as a manager and promoter.
He was behind the Myponga rock festival and managed a number of bands including the Bob Scott led Fraternity. Mr Henry also bought acts like Jerry Lee Lewis, Deep Purple and Manfred Mann to Australia and managed a number of international acts including The Pink Fairies, Focus and Charles Aznavour.
Mr Vanhoff said Temple Island, which is 60km south east of Mackay, features a rainforest and an abundance of orchids and exotic plants.
He said it has white sandy beaches as well as the undisturbed coral with oysters that “you can eat directly off the rocks.”
“It’s for sale at $1.75m, this is the asking price, however we will look at any reasonable offer for Temple Island,” Mr Vanhoff said.
“We said reasonable offer as we will not pass on any arbitrary or ridiculous offers: it is for sale and it has to be moved on, but there is no urgency.”
In April, Mr Vanhoff sold the 20ha Poole Island between Bowen and Airlie Beach to a South Australian-based real estate agent for about $1m.
He also has the world-renowned Sweers Island Resort in The Gulf of Carpentaria under contract for about $3.95m.
