A real estate agent has snapped up a private island in the Whitsundays for close to $1m, saying they have plans to turn it into a family getaway.

A private island in the northern Whitsundays, which went back to market after its original would-be buyer went missing, has found a new owner who plans to make it a family getaway.

A South Australian-based real estate agent will pay about $1m for the 20ha Poole Island, between Bowen and Airlie Beach, after it went back to market three weeks ago.

Private Islands Online Australia’s Richard Vanhoff said since the first deal fell through he received more than 300 emails and phone calls, and sent out 30 contracts.

“The new owner arrived by helicopter last week and he was looking for something for his family,” he said.

“He loved the joint. It’s a beautiful place and with a bit of time and care it will be a fantastic recreational home.

“He’s looking to refurb the island and create an old verses modern approach to the two buildings and build a large open deck and cabana around the rock pool, which would eventually compete with the best pool’s in Queensland.”

Poole Island has two houses – one built in the late 1800s and the other in the 1980s. The island lease has about two years to run and can be renewed for about $1000.

The property was last on the market in 2018 and it was bought by two Sydney-based businessmen for about $1.2m.

They asked for it to go on the market straight away after the original West Australian-based buyer could not be found to settle the contract.

Mr Vanhoff said why the would-be buyer was unable to be contacted was still a mystery.

“I understand he’s extremely embarrassed and upset over the publicity, and that he wasn’t able to complete the sale,” he said.

Mr Vanhoff has a number of other small Queensland islands on the market including Wedge Island off Yeppoon for about $1.95m; Quoin island near Gladstone for $1.9m; the resort of Sweers Island north of Burketown for $3.95m; and Temple Island south of Mackay for $1.7m.
