GERMAN supermarket giant Kaufland has boosted its Queensland development pipeline with the purchase of its fourth site in Brisbane’s outer south west.

Kaufland Australia has bought a two-lot 3.11ha development site on Progress Rd in Richlands, in Brisbane’s outer south, to complement its other properties at Morayfield, Toowoomba and Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast.

A Kaufland spokeswoman said: “We are committed to long term, sustainable investment in Queensland, with the aim to create opportunities for local businesses, new jobs, and deliver a customer centric shopping experience.”

According CoreLogic Kaufland paid $7 million for a 1.55ha site at 159 Progress Rd and $6 million for a 1.56ha site next to it at 177 Progress Rd in Richlands,

The property is in a retail hub and backs on to a former Masters and is next to a convenience centre and service station. It is near the Richlands train station.

Kaufland is snapping up sites for its planned Australian launch in 2021. It is currently building a $459 million distribution centre in outer Melbourne.

While a number of its sites in Victoria and South Australia have gone through or are going through the planning approval process its Toowoomba property is the only Queensland site that has had plans submitted to a local council.

The Toowoomba DA said retail store would be “noticeably bigger” than most Australian supermarkets.

The German hypermarket is making a pitch for Australia’s $90 billion grocery sector with its high margins and the strong market power held by the supermarket leaders.

Kaufland stores are typically more than double the size of a large-format Woolworths or Coles, and they offer a range of as many as 30,000 different products, more than 50 per cent more than a standard supermarket and compared to about 1500 products at an Aldi.

Kaufland will also carry a wide range of categories beyond groceries to general merchandise, consumer electronics, clothing, toys and hardware.
