German supermarket giant Kaufland buys its third Queensland site in Morayfield north of Brisbane

GERMAN supermarket giant Kaufland’s rollout of its southeast Queensland mega stores continues with the acquisition of its third site.

GERMAN supermarket chain Kaufland has boosted its Queensland development pipeline with the purchase of its third site.

Kaufland Australia has bought a site in Morayfield, north of Brisbane, to complement its sites in Toowoomba and at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast.

A Kaufland spokeswoman said: “We are committed to long term, sustainable investment in Queensland, and we are delighted to be looking at all sites and opportunities that are available.”

“We look forward to continuing to work together with Moreton Bay Regional Council and all key stakeholders with the goal to deliver high quality, great service and amazing value to the wider region”.

According CoreLogic Kaufland Australia acquired the Morayfield Village Retail Centre ay 177-189 Morayfield Rd. On a 1.7ha site the 7000sq m centre was marketed by Savills who could not be reached for comment.

Kaufland’s Australian arm has also bought a former Bunnings site at Reedy Creek Rd, in Burleigh Heads and has submitted a development application to Toowoomba Regional Council for its first Queensland store at 353-359 Anzac Ave.

The DA said retail store would be “noticeably bigger” than most Australian supermarkets.

“Kaufland stores will offer both national and international brands … an extensive range of local fresh food and groceries, and a range of non-food goods, potentially including items such as crockery and cutlery, cookware, small electrical appliances … as well as seasonal products and weekly promotional items,” it said.

Kaufland is a subsidiary of the Schwarz Group, the world’s fourth largest grocery conglomerate, which also owns Lidl.

Kaufland employs more than 150,000 workers across Europe, with each shop capable of stocking up to 60,000 product lines.

The company’s website says Kaufland has an “ambitious Australian investment and development program”, with plot requirements for the hypermarket a minimum of 15,000sq m, but up to 25,000sq m was preferable. It also needs enough space for 400 car parks.
