Dubbed “The Urban Forest” and designed by Koichi Takada Architects with landscape architects Lat27 and Arno King will be a 382 apartment tower at 82 and 88 Merivale St, and 23 and 25 Glenelg St.
The design proposes the “building is in itself a piece of public art on the largest scale possible and will become an attraction for Brisbane”.
Along with the proposal, also comes Aria’s master plan to create a green spine along Glenelg St. For residents, Aria has aimed at creating “backyards in the sky”, in addition to offering higher ceilings, more access to breezes and natural light, and a stunning rooftop recreation deck which even includes a 50m infinity edge pool.
According to the plans lodged Aria and Koichi Takada Architects said: “As cities become ever more dense and built-up, green spaces and provision for nature is even more necessary to maintain and increase the quality of life.
“Plants perform many services apart from their beauty, they provide oxygen, clean the air of pollutants, absorb carbon dioxide, retain moisture, create shade, are habitats for birds, animals and insects, cool the air around them by several degrees due to shading and transpiration, reduce dust and provide shelter from the wind.”
With 1003 trees The Urban Forest will feature more than 5 times the trees found in nearby Musgrave Park. The landscaping covers all six facades — including the ground plane, rooftop and all four elevations, mitigating the heat island effect.
The building delivers a Green plot ratio essentially three times the site area in gardens spread across the site, equivalent to taking 150 cars off the road each year, setting a new benchmark for sustainable and subtropical built form, an exemplar for design.
