Solar wind park set for north Qld
Australia's first large scale hybrid solar and wind plant will be built in north Queensland.
Construction on the $140 million Kennedy Energy Park at Hughenden, west of Townsville, is expected to begin within 12 months thanks to a joint venture between Australian renewable energy company Windlab and Japanese wind and solar operator and builder Eurus Energy.
Windlab says the first stage of the project will involve construction of six massive turbines spanning 136 metres in diameter; the largest ever seen in Australia.
Combined with 64,000 solar panels spread across 80 hectares, the park will generate enough energy to power more than 25,000 Queensland homes.
