Dozens of Queensland businesses were put into administration or liquidation in a month that’s become nationally known as the retail killing season.

A NEW year spelled trouble for many Queensland businesses which plunged into administration or liquidation in January.

During the month 49 companies were put under into administration or liquidation.

Queensland’s insolvencies were lower compared to previous months as high-profile national collapses dominated the headlines.

Major Australian retailers closed Queensland stores and shed jobs in January, a month becoming known as the ‘retail killing season’.

It led an insolvency expert to predict the high-profile collapse of Jeanswest and Harris Scarfe would be just the tip of the iceberg.

South Bank’s Presto Pizza & Pasta collapsed on January 20 with debts totalling about $900,000.

There were big developments too in companies already being investigated by liquidators.

An investigation into failed Wedding Planners Whitsundays, which went bust in October, may have been insolvent for at least three years before it collapsed.
