Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has asked residents whether they want some cafes and restaurants to be allowed to welcome dogs after a cafe was forced to enforce the rules and not allow pooches inside following an anonymous complaint to council.
Dog-friendly cafe Little Genovese, at Coorparoo, posted on Instagram to say “unfortunately dogs are no longer allowed inside ... You are welcome out the front and out the back, we still have plenty of treats for you!”
The changes were also written in white pen on the cafe’s window, with a photo of the window shared to a community Facebook group attracting more than 100 comments.
It prompted Schrinner to take to social media this week to ask if the rules should be reviewed to provide more flexibility.
“Should some cafes and restaurants be allowed to welcome dogs?” he asked.
“There are many pet-friendly hotels in Brisbane, but state and federal laws currently take a one-size-fits-all approach at food businesses.
“This means cafe and restaurant owners don’t even have the option of allowing dogs.”
